Accredited

Officially recognized as maintaining standards that qualify the graduates for admission to higher or more specialized institutions or for professional practice

Canadian Police Information Centre check

An examination of a person’s criminal history through Canada’s central police database

Certificate of conduct

An examination of a person’s criminal history, generally used by employers to assess that person’s trustworthiness

Character reference


Commissioner of oaths

A reference provided by someone who knows you and can attest to your character and abilities

An official authorized to take oaths or affirmations in a legal setting

Community pharmacy

Typically, a retail storefront combined with a dispensary where medications are stored and distributed

Criminal record check

An examination of a person’s criminal history, generally used by employers to assess that person’s trustworthiness

Equivalent

Recognized as equal in value or function

International Pharmacy Graduate (IPGs)

Pharmacists who have graduated from a pharmacy program which is not accredited in Canada or in the United States, by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs, are referred to as International Pharmacy Graduates or IPGs

Law enforcement agency

A government agency responsible for the enforcement of laws

Malpractice insurance

A type of professional liability insurance purchased by health care professionals

National ID number (candidate number)

The National ID number is a common identifier used throughout the licensure process by all the partners involved in the process (Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada, Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada and the pharmacy regulatory authorities you’ve applied to)

Notary public

A public officer constituted by law whose main functions are to administer oaths, witness signatures on affidavits and statutory declarations, provide acknowledgements, certify true copies, and similar non-contentious services

PEBC

The Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada is the national certification body for the profession of pharmacy in Canada. PEBC evaluates the qualifications of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on behalf of participating pharmacy licensing authorities. PEBC develops and administers examinations, including an Evaluating Examination for International Pharmacy Graduates and a national Qualifying Examination, and issues Certificates of Qualification

Permanent residency

The status of an individual who is not a Canadian citizen, but has the right to enter and remain in Canada

Preceptor

An experienced practitioner who provides role support and learning experiences to student and staff learners. A preceptor works with the learner for a defined period of time to assist the learner in acquiring new competencies required for safe, ethical and quality practice

Professional liability insurance

Insurance that helps protect advice- or service-providing professionals from bearing the full cost of defence against a negligence claim brought by a client and damages awarded in such a civil lawsuit

Prorated

Divided, distributed or assessed proportionally

Regulated health profession

A health care discipline governed by law and overseen by government, typically through governing bodies that regulate the activities of professional service providers

Statutory declaration

A sworn statement of fact written down and sworn to by the declarant before an individual who is authorized to administer oaths, such as a judge, lawyer, Commissioner for Oaths, or notary public

Witnessed

An official document whose authenticity is verifiable
